  • Kolkata: Even though severe cyclonic storm ‘Montha' did not have a direct impact on Kolkata, it brought scattered rain to the city and brought the maximum temperature down to below normal on Wednesday after 12 days.

At 29°C, the maximum temperature was 1.9 notches below normal. The Met office expects similar weather in the city on Thursday too.

The maximum temperature has stayed above normal constantly since Oct 18. This was also the first time since Oct 8 that the maximum temperature dipped below 30°C. The maximum temperature shot up to the month's highest of 34.2°C on Oct 20.

By Wednesday evening, Alipore had recorded 7.9 mm of rainfall.

However, a few pockets received sharper spells. According to a civic official, areas in Dum Dum, Belgachhia, Thanthania, Behala and Mominpore received more than 20 mm rain in an hour. KMC drainage department executive engineers pressed heavy-duty pumps into action at several places.

"We could avoid waterlogging because of the pumps at some of the major drainage pumping stations. We will keep the same arrangements for Thursday as well," said the civic official.

"We can expect the same type of weather for Kolkata on Thursday as well, when the city is likely to get a few spells of light to moderate rain. Some districts, however, will continue to get heavier rain," said Regional Meteorological Centre Kolkata head HR Biswas.

Even as the city escaped with light rain, some southern districts continued to get heavy rain. On Tuesday, gusty winds crashed two Jagaddhatri pandals in Hooghly and West Midnapore.

Moving north-northwestwards across Andhra Pradesh and adjoining Telangana and south Chhattisgarh, Montha retreated as a depression by Wednesday night. However, the system that caused a change in the wind pattern in Bengal will continue to bring in more moisture from the Bay of Bengal, causing thundercloud formation.

"Even as the rain spells will become scattered and lighter by Friday, the city will still have a partly cloudy sky for another two to three days," added Biswas.
