  • Kolkata: A 71-year-old senior citizen man from Roy Bahadur Road in Behala lost over Rs 55 lakh after being duped by fraudsters posing as agents of various insurance companies.

The accused allegedly convinced the senior citizen to surrender his old insurance policies, promising to facilitate the process.

However, they neither surrendered the policies nor returned the principal amount, instead provided forged and fabricated policy documents to gain the victim's trust. The accused carried out the conspiracy over several days, posing as multiple senior officers of insurance companies, a police officer said. Both threat and coaxing were used to pressurise the victim to pay up, he added.

Following the incident, police cautioned people against such frauds. Police are trying to identify the mobile numbers used for making the fraud calls and the bank accounts used for forgery. Attempt to reverse the money to the victim's account have also begun, the officer said.

A joint commissioner of police highlighted the risk of unscrupulous agents collecting premiums without forwarding them to the insurance company.

He advised consumers to be vigilant
