  • Trinamul Congress national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee visited the family of Pradeep Kar in Panihati, who died by suicide in fear of NRC on Tuesday.

After visiting the deceased’s family, addressing the Media, Abhishek said, “With a day of the announcement of SIR, we got the news that a 57-year-old man had taken his own life out of fear of SIR and NRC. I had connected with the family of the deceased yesterday and, along with our booth presidents, people’s representatives and party workers, we all came here to help and support them. Panic has set it because of NRC and SIR. On one hand, there is the ECI and on the other hand, the central government. They wish to keep people in fear and to create an atmosphere of terror. They want to decide who are the citizens of this country and who are not.”

Starting tomorrow, he gave the clarion call to hit the streets with one unequivocal demand: “Justice for Pradeep Kar”

Abhishek asked the people not to fear for anything as the Trinamul Congress and the state government will defend the genuine voters. “I wish to tell the locals, do not fear, we are still alive. As long as Mamata Banerjee’s government is here, we won’t allow this. Families who have been here for 30, 40, 50 years, whose parents and grandparents have lived here for generations, you [BJP] cannot label them as Bangladeshis. If they remove even one genuine voter from the lists, we will gherao the ECI office with one lakh people,” said Abhishek.

The TMC national general secretary mentioned about the news of another person in Dinhata attempting suicide out of fear of SIR by ingesting poison. “He has been taken to hospital. I pray that he recovers.”

The TMC leader said that the entire Bengal is demanding justice for Pradeep Kar. And those who are responsible for his death, Trinamul will send them to jail, no matter how much we have to fight, just as we fought for two years for the rights of poor people under the 100-days work scheme. And two days ago, the Supreme Court gave the order where 2.58 crore poor people got their victory, said Abhishek.

Abhishek challenged if Gyanesh Kumar’s father’s name is the voter list? “Can you show us the document? Can you show Amit Shah’s birth certificate? Starting from the PM to every cabinet minister, can you show us your fathers’ and grandfathers’ certificates, he asked.

He assured that Trinamul camps will be set up to help people and that there is no reason to fear. “If you have any problem, contact the local leader, BDO or panchayat office, councillor or municipality office, or any ward or Panchayat Pradhan who holds a party post. We are with you,” he assured.

The leader also said that the Centre had sent five people out as Bangladeshis by labelling them so but the TMC fought that legally and the High Court said they need to be repatriated. “We are preparing to get them back,” said Abhishek.
