• Met predicts thunderstorms with gusty winds in south Bengal districts today

  • After wreaking havoc in parts of Andhra Pradesh, the cyclonic storm ‘Montha’ weakened into a depression today bringing rainfall in several districts of South Bengal during the day.

    According to the weather scientists of the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), the Cyclonic Storm “Montha” over coastal Andhra Pradesh moved at a speed of 15 kmph in six hours this morning and got weakened into a deep depression at around 8.30 a.m. over coastal Andhra Pradesh and adjoining Telangana about 50 km south-southeast of Bhadrachalam, 110 km east of Khammam (Telangana), 130 km south-southwest of Malkangiri (Odisha) and 220 km south-southwest of Jagdalpur (Chhattisgarh). As informed by the weather department, the system moved north-northwestwards across Andhra Pradesh, adjoining Telangana and south Chhattisgarh and weakened into a depression during the next six hours.

    The movement of the system towards Chhattisgarh and the remnants of the storm brought rainfall in various districts of South Bengal during most parts of the day today. The South Bengal districts are expected to have wet days continuously for the next few days. The weather office has tipped heavy rainfall at one or two places over Birbhum, Murshidabad, West Burdwan and Purulia districts. It has also issued a forecast of thunderstorms with gusty wind having speed of around 30-40 kmph and lightning at one or two places over all the districts of South Bengal for tomorrow.

    The weather officials are anticipating light to moderate rain or thundershower at a few places over all the districts of South Bengal till 3 November while dry weather is forecast on 4 and 5 November.

    On Thursday and Friday, there may be heavy rain at one or two places, mainly in the western districts of Purulia, Birbhum, Murshidabad, East Burdwan and West Burdwan. The intensity of rain in south Bengal will reduce from Saturday onwards, and the sky will clear from Sunday.

    In north Bengal, light rain is likely in Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Malda and North Dinajpur districts later in the day. The rain will increase in this region from Thursday.

    There is a possibility of heavy to very heavy rain in all the northern districts on Friday.

    Although the rain will gradually decrease during the weekend, there is a possibility of rain with thunderstorms in some areas of north Bengal.
