  • Kolkata: Kolkata airport is set to launch a real-time traffic and waterlogging advisory service for travellers, with testing currently underway. Passengers will receive alerts on congestion and flooded routes via the airport's X handle, allowing them to factor in extra travel time or select alternate routes on Google Maps.

The service will initially monitor traffic on Jessore Road, Italgacha Road, VIP Road, Biswa Bangla Sarani through New Town and Belghoria Expressway.

While real-time information on congestion and waterlogging will appear on X, airport officials said airlines could push the same updates to passengers via SMS or WhatsApp alerts.

The initiative aims to assist thousands of daily commuters navigating Kolkata's busy streets to reach the airport.

Travellers will be able to access up-to-the-minute traffic conditions through the airport's website and mobile app.

"We understand the challenges passengers face while commuting to the airport, especially during the monsoon season when waterlogging is a common issue," said an airport official.

"Our goal is to provide travellers with the information they need to make informed decisions and ensure a smooth journey to the airport."

The service draws on real-time data from the Kolkata Traffic Police and integrates with navigation apps such as Google Maps, offering alerts on road closures, congestion and waterlogged areas, along with recommended alternative routes. Information will also be available on the airport's social media pages and microblogging site handles such as X.

Airlines have urged travellers to plan for extra travel time during peak hours and adverse weather conditions. The airport also advised flyers to check their flight status online or through their airline's app for any potential delays.

"This is a much-needed service," said Anindya Mukherjee, a frequent flyer. "Knowing the traffic conditions in advance will help me plan my journey better and reduce the stress of potentially missing my flight."
