Kolkata: The Bengal Police are all set to establish a new AI cell. Headed by an ADG-ranking officer, it will be located at Bhavani Bhawan.
The necessary directives for this initiative were issued by DGP Rajeev Kumar on Wednesday.
The DGP's order states, "In order to promote the adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) and related emerging technologies for enhancing efficiency, transparency, and service delivery, it has been decided to constitute an artificial intelligence (AI) Cell in the West Bengal Police Directorate with immediate effect.
"
The order further explains that the AI cell will serve as the central unit for all matters related to the introduction, integration, and governance of artificial Intelligence within the organization.
The AI cell's key functions will include policy formulation, developing an AI strategy, and implementing it for the force. It will recommend policies for the ethical, transparent, and accountable use of AI in the police force.
The ADG will be assisted by an IG, who will serve as the member secretary of the cell, and two technical experts.
The AI cell will design and develop projects for all police units and will also formulate training programmes for the force.
The AI cell experts will also assist in the capacity-building process of the force and help policemen understand the necessity of AI, an official said.
The AI cell will also establish connections with academic institutions, industry partners, startups, and govt agencies to familiarize the force with working in the AI domain. Policemen will be trained in data management and governance, along with the use of AI in implementing data management and security, with the aim of ensuring compliance with data privacy and cybersecurity.
The AI cell will hold meetings every fortnight to monitor ongoing AI projects and assess their outcomes. They will submit reports to the state govt about the progress achieved every six months, the officer said.
