  • The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Wednesday seized over Rs 1.20 crore as part of its ongoing search operations in connection with the West Bengal municipal recruitment scam, an official said.

The investigators, who began the raid on Tuesday, at the residence of a businessman in Taratala area in south Kolkata, seized a huge amount of unaccounted money, he added.

According to officials, the counting process is underway and the final recovered amount may increase.

“We started the raid yesterday in connection with the municipal recruitment scam. We have seized a huge amount of cash. The counting is on,” the official told news agency PTI.

The raid at the Taratala address is linked to a separate operation carried out on Tuesday at two addresses on Beleghata’s Hemchandra Naskar Road. Two brothers — a seasoned builder and a cloth merchant — residing at the Beleghata locations are under the ED scanner for their alleged role in the scam.

Additionally, the probe agency is also searching the house and godown of the owner of a private company located in Lake Town, based on the trail of investment linked to the recruitment scam.

The ED has been probing the municipal recruitment corruption case for several months and earlier arrested multiple persons. Earlier this month, it had conducted searches at several other locations in Kolkata, including the Salt Lake office of state Fire Minister Sujit Bose and a restaurant owned by his son in connection with the scam.
