  • Kolkata: This month was the second rainiest October in Kolkata since 2010. With a monthly rain total of 288.7 mm, the city has a rain surplus of 75%. Two heavy rainy days this month added to the rain excess for the city.

The Met office said there was a possibility of scattered rain in the city until the first half of Saturday, after which the chances of rain will diminish.

The only Oct that had a higher rain count since 2010 was in 2013 when Kolkata logged a monthly total of 523.1 mm of rain, which is also the all-time high for the month. In Oct 2024, the city recorded a monthly rain count of 285.9 mm, slightly lower than this Oct.

According to the meteorological table, the city should get a normal of 165.1 mm of rain.

Before the monsoon bade adieu on Oct 13, Kolkata witnessed two heavy rainy days where the 24-hour rain count was a little above 70 mm each.

"This Oct has been active in terms of rainfall activity. Two heavy rainy days on Oct 5 and 11, where the city got 70.7 mm and 72.9 mm, respectively, pushed up the monthly rain count resulting in a significant surplus," said RMC Kolkata head HR Biswas.

While the city was largely dry for close to two weeks after the monsoon's withdrawal, two more significant rainy days in the past week, as an indirect impact of severe cyclone Montha, also bolstered the rain count.

"Cyclone Montha influenced the wind pattern in our region where the southerly wind system started to inject moisture from the Bay of Bengal. This triggered a few spells of thundershower. We can expect the wind system to change again to the dry northerly or northwesterly by Monday," said Biswas.

Due to the frequent rain, the mercury this month did not go up sharply. In fact, the maximum temperature stayed below the normal in the first fortnight before it started rising marginally. The highest maximum temperature this month, 34.2 degrees on Oct 20, is the lowest Oct maximum in past five years. The lowest minimum temperature was 23.2 degrees, recorded on Oct 17.

"Currently, there is a cyclonic circulation over the Andaman Sea, which is likely to become a low-pressure area by Sunday. It is not certain how this system will influence the weather in our region," added Biswas.
