Kolkata: An advocate moved the bench of acting Chief Justice in the Calcutta High Court on Friday, seeking a court-monitored Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bengal.
Counsel for the petitioner, Sabyasachi Chatterjee, sought leave of the bench to file a PIL, praying for a court-monitored SIR and extension of the period fixed by the ECI for house-to-house enumeration of voters. The request was made because the ECI declared 2002 as the base year for consideration for enumeration in the electoral rolls.
Counsel Chatterjee also sought a direction from the HC to the ECI, directing the poll body to state reasons for the necessity of conducting SIR in West Bengal. Acting CJ Sujay Paul observed that there was no need to seek leave for filing the PIL and asked petitioner Pintu Karar to file the petition. — Subrata Chattoraj
