  • Kolkata: The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) might demolish rooftop restaurants that do not adhere to fire safety rules, mayor Firhad Hakim said on Friday.

The civic body may take this drastic step after an inspection.

Earlier, the KMC had given three-month's time to the restaurant owners before Durga Puja to ensure that their establishments have proper fire safety arrangements.

Hakim said a joint drive would be conducted along with the fire services department to check whether the restaurants that reopened after submitting an indemnity bond are adhering to fire safety rules.

"We will visit the rooftop restaurants to check whether a section of such restaurants that reopened after submitting an indemnity bond are abiding by the mandatory fire safety rules as specified by the state high-powered committee on fire safety," Hakim said.

"We will also focus on owners who have not submitted an indemnity bond," the mayor added.

A source in the KMC said on Thursday that out of 83 rooftop restaurants, owners of around 30 restaurants applied before the deadline expired.

"We gave the opportunity to the owners of rooftop restaurants to recover their lost business. While a section of the owners responded, others are yet to come to terms," said a civic official.
