KMC steps up dengue drive in N Kol after girl’s death

Kolkata: After a 4-year-old girl of Raja Rajkrishna Street died, the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) health department has turned its focus on vector control activities at several north Kolkata neighbourhoods that may witness a spurt in dengue cases.
According to a KMC vector control wing official, the dengue death in the neighbourhood came as a surprise to the civic body as there were no known dengue cases in the entire belt.
According to a KMC health department official, in the last week, the civic body recorded 85 fresh dengue cases. These cases have taken the total dengue numbers to 1,017 (till Oct 26), which is higher than last year's data (791). But the count is much lower than that of 2023 (11,441).
Mayor Firhad Hakim on Friday advised the KMC health department to conduct regular joint drives in the areas, where dengue cases are on the rise.
As the comparative figures of case count showed an upward graph, a KMC health department official believed there were reasons to worry for. A section of the KMC health department officials has suggested a joint drive (with other civic departments) in some of the city areas that have been showing an upward dengue graph over the past month. Dum Dum, Cossipore, Belgachia, Beadon Street, Elliot Road, Park Circus, Iron Side Road, Palm Avenue, Mukundapur, Madurdaha, Kasba, Garfa, Bansdroni, and areas sharing the Rajpur-Sonarpur municipality border, are among the vulnerable areas. "Bhowanipore, Hazra, Ballygunge, Kalighat, Chetla, New Alipore, Behala, Kidderpore, Jodhpur Park, Golf Green, Dhakuria, Santoshpur, among other areas, are under the dengue scanner of KMC," another official said.
