• Armed and masked robbers loot 2.4kg gold & two-wheeler in Sinthi

  • Kolkata: A goldsmith, Sanjit Kumar Roy (54), was robbed of 2.4 kg of gold, worth Rs 3 crore, at gunpoint in Sinthi on Thursday night. Roy, who hails from Daspur in West Midnapore, was also reportedly assaulted when he tried to resist.

    A local has already been detained for questioning.

    The incident was reported around 8.10 pm on Thursday when Roy was returning to his workplace on Apurba Krishna Lane, located close to the Alvert David Factory. The accused also fled with the craftsman's scooter, in which the bag with the gold was stored.

    According to the victim, he was returning to the Sinthi factory with gold that he bought from a larger gold firm on the directions of his employer.

    As he stopped his scooter in front of the factory gate, two armed and masked men threatened him and fled with the scooter and the gold.

    "A letter of complaint was submitted by the victim, Sanjit, against unknown accused persons. He stated that two unidentified persons stole a gold bar weighing about 2 kg 380 g and a two-wheeler from 6/J, Raja Apurba Krishna Lane. The crime was committed with the accused brandishing firearms while the complainant was entering his workshop. We have initiated a case under 309(4) of BNS read with sections 25 and 27 of the Arms Act," said a Joint CP.

    Describing the incident, Roy said, "As I was entering the alley on my scooter, I saw two people standing there. They were wearing masks. I was opening the factory gate when one of the accused aimed a gun at me. When I tried to scream for help, they hit me. I begged them not to hurt me. Then the robbers fled with my scooter, which had the gold. Hearing my screams, the factory workers came out."

    Roy said, "They must have known about my movement in advance. Our factory owner has approached the police. They are investigating the robbery."
