Kolkata:
' heroics on Thursday night led to a last-minute rush to Navi Mumbai to catch Harmanpreet Kaur-led
cross swords with the South African women to create history on Sunday. Since few tickets are available, Kolkata fans are also making plans to cheer from their homes, at restaurants, and pubs across the city that have already started receiving queries for bookings.
Travel agents have been flooded with queries, and some are arranging match tickets for those making a last-minute dash to the DY Patil Stadium, even as the lowest price of a Kolkata-Mumbai flight ticket soared to Rs 19,468 on Sunday.
Around 1,000 from Kolkata are set to fly to Mumbai for the match between Saturday and early on Sunday, including many who are combining family or work trips, according to Manav Soni of the Travel Agents Association of India.
"Few expected India to reach the final, and now they are on the cusp of creating history. Enquiries started pouring in immediately after the semi-final. Many have already booked flight tickets themselves or through us and are asking for match tickets.
Some have bought them online, while for others, we are arranging tickets, though not many are available," said Soni.
The website Viagogo is offering a few tickets for the match with prices ranging between Rs 5,796 and Rs 41,229.
Flight ticket prices jumped to Rs 16,465 on Saturday and Rs 19,468 on Sunday. "Those who booked tickets by Thursday night were lucky, for the fares may touch Rs 20,000 on Sunday," said Anil Punjabi of AR-ES Travels and a committee member of the Travel Agents' Federation of India. "The women's match is set to be watched by a lot more than the men's T20 on Sunday, which is an encouraging sign for women's cricket," he added.
Restaurants with screens expect a full house on Sunday evening.
Footfalls could soar 20% higher than the average on Sunday, according to Sudesh Poddar, president of the Hotel and Restaurants' Association of Eastern India (HRAEI). "Indian men will play a T20 against Australia, which will also be keenly followed. The women's final will continue till well past 10:30 pm, so we expect a full house throughout the day. With both teams playing, it will be a double treat for cricket fans," said Poddar, also the owner of Songhai, Manthan, and MS Bar & Lounge.
The restaurant will serve Smriti Sundaes and Jemima Jade Fried Chicken as a tribute to the leading ladies of Indian cricket.
Chapter 2 off Southern Avenue has curated special cocktails for the occasion and introduced starters for cricket fans. "We hope to be fully occupied on Sunday evening and expect a sharp rise in online orders," said owner and co-founder Shiladitya Chaudhury.
The final has generated a lot of interest, said Specialty Restaurants founder and MD Anjan Chatterjee. "There will be a sharp increase in footfall since we have TVs at all our outlets," said Chatterjee.
