• Over 60 madrassa students fall ill after meal

  • Burdwan: More than 60 students of a private residential madrassa were hospitalised with food poisoning after they consumed a meal on Saturday morning. The incident took place at Pichkuri of Ausgram in East Burdwan district.

    The students were initially taken to a hospital in Guskara near Bolpur and were later transferred to Burdwan Medical College and Hospital (BMCH). At least three of the students are critical, according to Tapas Ghosh, medical superintendent-cum-vice principal of BMCH.

    The students of Nababia madrassa started falling ill around four hours after the meal. Initially, a medical team at the madrassa attended to them. But after their condition worsened, the boys were hospitalised. Upon receiving information, chief medical officer of East Burdwan, Joyram Hembram rushed to BMCH around 10pm. Hembram said 160 students had consumed the meal. A probe has been ordered into the incident. A food safety team visited the premises of the madrassa on Sunday as part of the probe.
