  • With West Bengal reeling under the Cyclone Montha effect, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted that the northern parts of the state will continue to experience incessant rain on Saturday.

An orange alert has been issued in North Bengal areas such as Murshidabad, North Dinajpur, South Dinajpur, Malda, Jalpaiguri, Coochbehar, and Alipurduar districts that are likely to receive light to moderate thunderstorms and lightning accompanied by intense rain and gusty winds with a speed of 30-40 kmph.

In its bulletin, IMD has issued a yellow alert for Kolkata, East Midnapur, North and South 24 Parganas, Nadia, and Howrah districts of South Bengal that are likely to receive light to moderate rain or thundershower, accompanied by gusty wind.

Meanwhile, the maximum and minimum temperatures in Kolkata are likely to be around 31˚C and 25˚C, respectively.

Life in North Bengal has been thrown out of gear due to the aftereffects of Cyclone Montha. In Darjeeling, around 20 relief shelters were opened, where over 100 families took temporary refuge. Community kitchens have been set up. According to District Magistrate Shama Parveen, 3000 people have been moved to relief camps.

On Friday, Shraddha Subba, the Sub-Divisional Officer of Dhupguri, along with Galson Lepcha, Sub-Divisional Police Officer, and others, visited Gadheyarkuthi.

Continuous rainfall has resulted in the swelling of the Balason river at Dudhia on Friday, disrupting the connectivity between Mirik and Siliguri. The local administration has stopped transportation over the bridge, keeping in mind of the public safety. The temporary Hume pipe bridge (vented causeway) over the river was opened to the public on Monday after the old iron bridge was damaged during the October 5 flash floods.
