More ‘box drains’ to check dengue menace in New Town

Kolkata: Following the covering of about three km of drainage channels in New Town with box-shaped concrete slabs to prevent dumping of waste and maintain cleanliness, the New Town Kolkata Development Authority (NKDA) is set to cover another 1.6 km canal stretch from near Balaka Abason to Street No.
276.
NKDA has been working to cover the periphery canals or drainage channels moving across New Town by installing box-shaped concrete slabs on selected sections. This aims to maintain cleanliness and prevent waste accumulation on the sides of the canal stretches that could turn into mosquito breeding grounds.
Officials said that specific sections of the periphery canals are being covered with such concrete box-like slabs. "Fixing such covered sections will help keep the canals tidy, minimising the accumulation of waste and significantly reducing mosquito breeding sites by limiting stagnant water exposure," said an official. Locals living adjacent to these large drains report ongoing issues with mosquitoes throughout the year.
They note that these drainage channels have increasingly become disposal sites for waste, creating potential mosquito breeding locations.
