Behrampore: Three children were run over by the Kamakhya-Puri Express train while crossing a railway line in Murshidabad on Saturday afternoon. Another child was injured in the incident.
The incident took place at the railway underpass between Madhupur and Nabin Shibnagar, situated between Suti and Shamsherganj in Murshidabad. Railway police officials, including Farakka SDPO Sheikh Shamsuddin, Suti Police Station IC Supriyo Ranjan Majhi, and Samsherganj Police Station IC Subrata Ghosh, rushed to the spot.
According to locals, waterlogging in the railway underpass forced the children to cross the tracks.
As they attempted to navigate the railway line, the train approached from Jangipur towards Farakka, while a goods train travelled in the opposite direction. The children found themselves trapped between the two trains, leading to the accident.
Three children died at the spot, while the fourth, Mobarak Sheikh, aged 11, suffered injuries and was admitted to a local hospital. The deceased have been identified as Rihat Sheikh (7), Jisan Sheikh (9), and Ariyan Sheikh (7).
The incident has sparked outrage among locals, who blame the railway authorities for the waterlogged underpass.
Samiul Islam, the Nimtita gram panchayat pradhan, alleged negligence of the railway authorities. Shamsherganj MLA Amirul Islam also visited the scene, condemning the construction of the underpass and demanding accountability from railway officials.
