• Storm water pipe revamp to keep Chingrighata dry

  • Kolkata: The Nabadiganta Industrial Township Authority (NDITA) has prepared a Rs 1.9 crore plan to revamp the storm water pipeline from Chingrighata to Sukantanagar along the service road of Salt Lake Bypass to minimise waterlogging during heavy rain.

Officials said the drainage and storm water network pipeline on the stretch was earlier impacted due to the metro construction and needs to be revamped.

"At present, waterlogging occurs as the storm water line is damaged in several sections. As metro construction work in the section has been completed, it has now been decided to repair and revamp the storm water pipe network at the place so that the excess water can properly flow out to the nearest drainage pumping station close to Wipro, from which it can be pumped out to the Eastern Drainage channel," an NDITA official said.

NDITA is in the process of engaging a firm to take up the work. The selected agency will need to complete the work within three months.

Waterlogging in the sector during heavy rain has been a major issue and a concern for the authorities. NDITA operates additional pumping machines to flush out the excess storm water. The authorities had earlier conducted a topographical survey of the drainage network of Sector V to check if there was any fault in the lines and if there was any scope or need to upgrade the existing drainage network.

Officials said that at present, there are five drainage pumping stations in Sector V. Each of the pump houses has about three pumps, including one higher-capacity pump and two of smaller capacity. Normally, one big and one small pump remain in operation, and the other small pump remains in standby mode. The higher capacity pump has a 2,000 cubic metre per hour water discharge capacity, and each of the two smaller pumps has a water discharge capacity of 1,000 cubic metres per hour.
