Kolkata: A 33-year-old son of a Habra businessman punched and shoved former minister and Habra MLA Jyotipriya Mullick at the latter's Salt Lake home on Sunday evening.
, alias Papan, was overpowered by Mullick's personal security and handed over to police.
He was arrested.
Das's family has told police that he was undergoing treatment for mental health at NRS Hospital for the past four years.
"This was very sudden and very scary. He was talking to me when he suddenly attacked me. I lost my balance for a few moments," Mullick said. The MLA has a makeshift office at his Salt Lake home. Locals claimed Das was hovering for some time and sought permission to meet Mullick to "seek a job". Mullick met him. Das touched Mullick's feet and then got up and suddenly attacked him.
Das later told police that he did not hit Mullick. He said while he was standing up, Mullick suddenly leaned and that led to the mishap. Records indicated Das was involved in local brawls in the past, police said.
