  • KOLKATA: Former West Bengal minister and Trinamool Congress MLA Jyotipriyo Mallick was assaulted at his Salt Lake residence on Sunday night by a 30-year-old man who had been following him.

The attacker, Abhishek Das, was subsequently arrested and is being questioned by police.

The incident occurred around 9 pm when Das followed Mallick into his residence and suddenly attacked him, punching him in the lower abdomen. Security staff and others nearby quickly responded to Mallick's calls for help and subdued the attacker, according to news agency PTI.

The assailant was handed over to Bidhannagar police for investigation.

During questioning, Das revealed he was from the Habra area in North 24 Parganas district and wanted to speak with Mallick about employment opportunities.

Police investigations revealed that Das had been receiving psychiatric treatment at a state hospital in the city. He had conducted several reconnaissance visits to Mallick's house earlier that day.

"I am not sure if he was in an inebriated condition. I had never seen him before.

It is unimaginable that someone from Habra will assault me," Mallick told reporters.

Mallick said he initially thought Das was a regular visitor seeking to meet him. He characterized the attack as an isolated incident.

The attacker is from Habra constituency, which Mallick represents in the West Bengal assembly.

Mallick was previously arrested by central agencies in connection with a corruption case approximately two years ago during his tenure as forest minister. The corruption allegations were related to his earlier role as food and civil supplies minister.

Following his arrest, Mallick was removed from his position as forest minister, and Birbaha Hansda took over the role.
