  • The Trinamul Congress (TMC) on Monday once again highlighted the issue of illegal deportation of Bengali-speaking migrant workers from other states. In a post on X, the party said how the names of deported Sunali Khatun’s parents are featured in the 2002 electoral rolls, a proof of her legitimacy of being an Indian citizen.

The TMC wrote: “On 18 June, eight-month-pregnant Sunali Khatun and her family were apprehended by @AmitShah’s Delhi Police on suspicion of being illegal immigrants. On 26 June, despite producing valid citizenship documents, they were pushed into Bangladesh in the dead of night.

“On 26 September, the Calcutta High Court found them to be legitimate Indian citizens and ordered their repatriation within four weeks. That deadline has long passed, yet the heartless, Jono-Birodhi, Bangla-Biddeshi @narendramodi Govt. has not lifted a finger to ensure their return.

“Now, her parents’ names have been found on the 2002 electoral rolls, further conclusive proof of her Indian citizenship. What, then, explains this continuing delay except blatant discrimination against a proud Bengali family?

“Do the Modi–Shah duo treat the Republic as their private fiefdom? Their arrogance will have a price. Come 2026, the people will remind them exactly where they stand in the court of public opinion.”

Trinamul MP Samirul Islam has also posted in his official X handle on the issue. He wrote: “Our National General Secretary @abhishekaitc raised pertinent questions regarding the deportation of Sunali Khatun and Sweety Bibi.

“During the interaction with the media today, he pointed out that the names of Sunali Khatun’s father and mother are present in the 2002 electoral roll of the Murarai Assembly Constituency.

“On the other hand, names of Sweety Bibi’s parents appear in the post-SIR electoral roll in Jharkhand. Sweety’s mother was a resident of Murarai and was married to her father who was a resident of Jharkhand. So their names are in the electoral roll in Jharkhand.

“The Election Commission has assured that individuals whose names were included in the 2002 electoral roll, along with their children, are considered safe as legitimate voter during the SIR.

“Our leader @abhishekaitc questioned: “Then how were Sunali Khatun and Sweety Bibi deported?”

“We also demand an answer from the anti-Bengali BJP.”
