Over 80,000 booth-level officers (BLOs) will begin the door-to-door survey for the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls ahead of the Assembly election in the state. The exercise carried out by the Election Commission (EC) will also begin in eight other states and three Union Territories from today.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and TMC general secretary Abhishek Banerjee are expected to lead a padyatra in Kolkata against the roll out of the SIR in the state. The ruling TMC has warned that deletion of any “genuine” voters’ names from the revised electoral roll would meet with protest.

The procession is scheduled to begin around 1:30 pm from Dr BR Ambedkar’s statue on Red Road and is set to culminate at Jorasanko Thakurbari, the birthplace of Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore.

Due to the TMC padyatra in Kolkata, traffic is expected to be affected in the central part of the city from afternoon.

Roads to avoid: Red Road, BB Ganguly Street, and Esplanade area, Chittaranjan (CR) Avenue, Jawaharlal Nehru Road (JL Nehru Road), and SN Banerjee Road, Also, the Periphery College Street, Nirmal Chandra Street, Rafi Ahmed Kidwai Road, and Dorina Crossing connecting Arterial Roads AJC Bose Road, Bidhan Sarani, and Strand Road

Advisory: Commuters are strongly advised to avoid these roads and plan alternative routes, particularly during the peak disruption period from 12 noon to late evening.

While the weather in large parts of West Bengal is likely to be pleasant with maximum temperature in the south districts to range between 28 degree Celsius and 30 degree Celsius, and minimum temperature hovering at 21-23 degree Celsius, sub-Himalayan districts in the north are likely to expect rainfall and drop in temperature. The Met Department has issued a forecast of heavy to very heavy rainfall in neighbouring Sikkim and the Himalayan parts of West Bengal like Darjeeling, Kalimpong and Kurseong districts.
