• Row over bird death at vet clinic, one held

  • Kolkata: A man lodged a police complaint against the owner of a veterinary clinic near Mudiali for "medical negligence" that allegedly led to the death of a blue macaw two days ago, and for molesting the complainant's associate when they protested at the clinic.

Accused clinic owner Varun Kajaria was arrested. He lodged a counter complaint, saying the complainant and his associates vandalised the clinic.

The bird's carcass has been sent for tests to ascertain if there was any negligence in treatment.

Businessman Rahul Chakraborty from Behala said, "My macaw was not moribund when I admitted it to the clinic on Oct 30 for treatment of stomach trouble. Doctors said it needed surgery, and I deposited half of the amount — Rs 12,500. On Monday, the clinic asked me to visit." At the clinic, Chakraborty found the bird had died.

"I wanted to get a postmortem done, but the clinic refused to release the carcass," he said. Chakraborty then sought the intervention of local MP Mala Roy. "I asked the clinic owner to release the carcass. But he was misbehaving," Roy said.

Both Chakraborty and Roy denied Kajaria's vandalism charge. "Since molestation was involved, there was an arrest. As for property damage, we will issue notices to those concerned," an officer said.
