Just a day after the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process began, a large number of Aadhaar cards sealed in bags were recovered from a lake in Purbasthali, causing a commotion this morning.
At Lalitpur, residents were shocked to see hundreds of Aadhaar cards floating in the lake. The matter came to light when labourers engaged by the local Pilu Gram Panchayat to clear shrubs from the marshy lake discovered the cards. While collecting them, they found three large bags underwater. The sealed bags were fished out, and one of them, ruptured by fish, had released some of the cards into the water.
Most of the recovered cards bore addresses from the local Pila, Hamidpur, and Lalitpur areas. Local BJP leader Debabrata Mondal alleged that the ruling Trinamul Congress had dumped illegally procured Aadhaar cards into the lake. However, Tapan Chatterjee, MLA of Purbasthali (Uttar), dismissed the claim, saying: “Some agents were selling Aadhaar cards for Rs 500, which we recently stopped. Fearing police action, the agents might have disposed of these cards.”
