• BJP accuses Jamuria MLA of having name in voter lists of UP, Bengal

  • A controversy has erupted after BJP MLA from Asansol South Assembly constituency, Agnimitra Paul, alleged that West Burdwan district chairman of the Trinamul Congress and sitting MLA of Jamuria, Hareram Singh, holds voter cards in two states — Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal.

Following her social media post, the BJP launched a sharp attack on Hareram Singh over the issue amid the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process of the Election Commission of India (ECI).

Speaking to The Statesman, Ms Paul said she had urged the Uttar Pradesh government to verify whether Mr Singh had cast his vote in the last Assembly polls in that state. “The SIR process began only two days ago, and already we are receiving such information. What will we discover after the entire process concludes a month later?” she questioned.

As soon as a photo showing Mr Singh’s name in the Uttar Pradesh voter list went viral on social media, BJP leaders intensified their criticism of the Trinamul Congress, alleging that his registration as a voter in both states raises serious concerns about the authenticity of the electoral process.

Mr Singh, however, refuted the allegations that he had voted in the last Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections. “It is the Election Commission of India’s job to verify these matters. I am registered as a voter in the Pandaveswar constituency, and I cast my vote only in this state,” he said.

According to records, Mr Singh’s name appears in the voter list for the 362 Bansdih Assembly constituency under the Salempur Lok Sabha seat in Ballia district, Uttar Pradesh. The voter ID number is listed as DOI4061244, with the following details:

    Name: Hareram Singh

    Father’s Name: Late Bhola Singh

    Age: 71

    House Number: 362

    Part Number: 91

    **Serial Number:** 646

    Elector ID: 38/263/3661144

    Address: Village–Bahula, Post–Bahula, District–Ballia, Uttar Pradesh.

The Uttar Pradesh voter list was last updated on 25 October, 2024.

At the same time, Mr Singh’s name also appears in the West Bengal voter roll under the Pandaveswar Assembly constituency of West Burdwan district, which was last updated on 24 December.

This dual listing has provided the Opposition with fresh ammunition to target the ruling party.

BJP leaders have demanded an investigation, claiming that the matter constitutes a serious violation of electoral norms.

However, Mr Singh dismissed the accusations, reiterating that he had no involvement in the issue. “I am a voter in Pandaveswar. It is the election commission’s responsibility to review and correct voter lists. I have no role in this matter,” he said.

The West Burdwan district electoral office stated that if any official complaint is lodged, it will be forwarded for investigation.
