  • Kolkata: The city's healthcare received a boost with one of its largest private hospitals receiving the Joint Commission International (JCI) accreditation. Desun Hospital on E M Bypass became the third major hospital group in Kolkata to receive the accreditation, which is globally recognised as an endorsement of ‘world-class patient safety and quality care'.

Apollo Superspecialty Hospital and Narayana Hospitals have also got the accreditation.

This recognition will spur Desun, a 750-bed facility, to increase efficiency, reduce errors, and push for comprehensive digitalisation, according to CEO Shaoli Dutta. In 2028, Desun plans to launch a 1,500-bed teaching hospital and a private medical college. "Since the JCI requires affiliated units to meet global standards, this will push us to deliver our best. It opens us up to patients from Southeast Asia, the Gulf, and Africa," said Dutta.

The hospital has tied up with Bhutan govt, which will send patients.

This accreditation is unique, said to Narayana Hospitals (East) COO R Venkatesh. But some felt it does not make a big difference. "Due to flight connectivity issues, Kolkata doesn't yet get a lot of medical tourists," said Prashant Sharma, MD of Charnock Hospital and chairperson of the Indian Chamber of Commerce healthcare committee.
