The new oncology ward of Serampore Sramajibi Hospital, located in a rural panchayat area, was officially inaugurated by cancer winners, patients who have successfully battled the disease.
At the event, 22 cancer survivors who had received treatment at the hospital at different times and are now in good health, were honoured with certificates, flowers, and sweets.
Cancer survivors Mansura Begum, Mukesh Dutta, Sandhya Chandan Das, Ajmira Begum, Bharati Das, and others inaugurated the new oncology unit.
The oncology unit has been designed to facilitate various treatments while ensuring comfort, safety, and privacy for patients.
Dr Anil Saha, secretary of Shramjibi Hospital, said: “Cancer treatment has been ongoing at our hospital for a long time. Since 1997-98, we have been conducting cancer treatment, surgeries, and early cancer detection camps. We have treated many complex cancer cases, and several patients have completely recovered. However, there was a long-felt need for a separate cancer ward or oncology unit. Through the joint efforts of the hospital authorities and specialist oncologists, we have now been able to set up a dedicated oncology unit with the required infrastructure and medical facilities.”
Dr Saha added: “While we have been treating cancer patients for years, this is the first time a separate ward has been established exclusively for oncology.”
Cancer specialist Dr Shyam Sundar Adhikari said, “To ensure patients’ comfort, safety, and privacy, the ongoing development of infrastructure will include more facilities such as private rooms, shared occupancy rooms, isolation rooms, infusion bays, radiation vaults, and family-attended spaces.”
