No Form 7 needed, drive helps delete dead kin’s name

Kolkata: The ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise has given electors the option to permanently delete the name of any deceased family member from the electoral roll.
An elector must write ‘Expired' in large font on the enumeration form of the deceased family member, similar to how ‘cancelled' is written on a cancelled cheque. They must also write their name, relationship with the member and sign. The deceased elector's name is automatically deleted and will not appear in the draft SIR list to be published on Dec 9, an ECI official said.
"In order to delete any deceased elector's name from the electoral list, one needs to fill out and submit Form 7.
However, during SIR, Form 7 submission is not required. Any elector who wants to delete a deceased member's name from the electoral list can do it through the enumeration form itself," the official added.
Electors often complain that the names of deceased family members are not being deleted despite repeated applications. The deletion of the names of deceased voters through the SIR process itself will resolve the issue, another ECI official said.
When asked what would happen if an elector intentionally apply to delete the name of a family member, falsely stating the person as ‘dead' due to a family feud or personal grudge, the official replied: "Then the elector who has made the application will face imprisonment of up to one year, a fine, or both."
