• RG Kar protest docs to hold second fest

  • Kolkata: For the first time, RG Medical College and Hospital will have two fests in a year. In Sept, the 139-year-old institution organised its fest, Lobelia. However, some doctors and students stated that it deviated from the decency and traditions of the medical college, and those accused of threat culture were part of it.

Therefore, they are set to organise another fest, Aurora, from Nov 18 to 22.

On the first two days of the fest, there will be academic medical discussions, in which noted faculties from different hospitals will talk about the primary role of a doctor while handling snake-bite patients or other emergency situations. The remaining three days will feature various cultural events, including band performances and a performance of Rabindranath Tagore's ‘Raktakarabi', which will also link to their movement — justice for Abhaya.

"Those accused of threat culture on our campus were part of the fest in Sept, which also witnessed cultural degradation. To raise our voice against the erosion of cultural values, we have decided to organise another fest, a decent cultural show. Our teachers and parents, who stood beside us during the RG Kar movement, are likely to enjoy the show," said Sourav Das, a PGT who is president of the organising committee of Aurora.

A junior doctor of the medical college, requesting anonymity, said, "We are used to holding medical camps and don't have any previous experience of organising any fest. The TMCP took the first initiative to organise a fest at our college. We joined the RG Kar movement, and eventually, the student body of the college was formed. For the previous fest, those involved in threat culture forcibly raised funds, and the cultural decadence manifested by the organisers kept the student body members away.

So, we are organising the second fest to restore the glory of our medical college."
