  • Kolkata: A 30-year-old woman was allegedly molested by an auto driver when she was travelling from Taratala to Porra-Aswathatala on Sunday. She was sitting in the front seat when the incident occurred.

The driver, Nirmal Chettri, even allegedly followed her to her home but residents of the area caught him as she raised an alarm.

Chettri is currently in police custody.

According to the complaint lodged at the Thakurpukur Police Station, Chettri allegedly touched the woman inappropriately shortly after the journey began. Initially, she dismissed it as an accident but as they reached Kadamtala and the other passengers alighted, the driver touched her private parts, police said.

As she protested, Chettri allegedly took the auto into an alley, when the woman jumped off. She subsequently took a rickshaw home. But, said police, the auto driver followed the woman to her residence and continued to harass her. She raised an alarm, and residents of the area caught the driver. With their help, she took Chettri to the police station.

"Initially, I didn't say anything as I thought it was accidental. But soon I realised this was deliberate. When I protested, instead of stopping,he drove the vehicle into a by-lane. I jumped out of the auto and took a rickshaw home. I found out that the auto driver had followed me all the way home," the woman said.

The police have registered a case under under sections 74 and 78 of the BNS. The investigation was initiated under the supervision of the officer-in-charge of Thakurpukur PS. Cops have moved court to record the statement of the woman.
