• Migrant deportation: HC allows contempt plea against Centre

  • Kolkata: The Calcutta High Court on Tuesday accepted the contempt plea against the Centre for not bringing back six deported migrant workers — including Sunali Khatun and her family — despite the HC's order.

The Union govt has been directed to submit a statement by Nov 28.

The counsel representing the deported workers' families submitted before the division bench of justices Tapabrata Chakraborty and Reetobroto Kumar Mitra that a Special Leave Petition (SLP) had been filed before the Supreme Court by Centre challenging the Calcutta HC order. However, the SLP had defects in its filing.

The govt filed the SLP challenging the Calcutta HC order quashing the Delhi FRRO's deportation order on Oct 22, two days before the deadline set by the HC ended.

The bench on Sept 26 had directed the govt to bring back Sunali Khatun, her husband and child, as well as Sweety Bibi and her two sons from Bangladesh. They were all picked up on June 21 in Delhi, and a deportation order was given on June 26. The HC quashed the FRRO order, saying it had procedural lapses.
