Malda: The family of a 65-year-old man from South Dinajpur's Kumargunj, who hanged himself on Monday, claimed that he had died by suicide after extreme anxiety over a mismatch in his name as listed in the 2002 SIR and the present voter list.
Ochhman Mandal had been scared since the announcement of the special intensive revision (SIR) of voter rolls in Bengal. The farmer's fear stemmed from the fact that his name was recorded as ‘Ochhman Mollah' in the 2002 list. The family claimed that Mandal had approached the panchayat office and local netas for the correction.
While district TMC neta Nikhil Singha Roy claimed that SIR panic had led to Mandal's suicide, BJP disputed it.
