• TMC leaders hold street corners, rallies to allay SIR fears

  • Debangshu Bhattacharya along with local leaders of Nadia (Ranaghat) met the family of late Shyamal Santra, who died due to SIR fear on Thursday, whereas Senior TMC leader and minister Dr Shashi Panja spoke at a public rally against SIR, NRC and justice for death of Pradip Kar in Sandeshkhali 1 block. At Falakata, a street corner was organised where the lead speaker was MP Ritabrata Banerjee.

With directions from TMC national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee the leaders tried to allay fears from SIR.

Ritabrata Banerjee said: “SIR has created so much panic amongst the people that people are committing suicide. In 2021 their general census was supposed to take place but it never happened and no one knows when it will happen. But, the SIR is happening, that too in such a hurried manner. It happened last in 2002 and it took more than 24 months to complete it. SIR could have been undertaken earlier, in between elections but it wasn’t done. What is surprising is that even before the exercise is finished, BJP leaders are giving out numbers as to how many names will be deleted.”
