  • A special emergency meeting of the Trinamul Congress women’s wing at Trinamul Bhavan yesterday decided on two important programmes, which will be carried out throughout the state over the next two months, ahead of the Assembly elections next year.

The twin programmes, mass outreach missions, will tell the people how the central government is trying to alter the India Constitution and how the Trinamul Congress is trying to save the constitutional rights of the people.

The meeting, under the leadership of state finance minister and Trinamul Congress women’s wing president Chandrima Bhattacharya was attended by Bidhannagar mayor Krishna Chakraborty, MP Mala Roy, Smita Bakshi, women presidents of various districts and women leaders of Trinamul Congress, said sources.

Mrs Bhattacharya reviewed the preparations for achieving good results in the upcoming 2026 Assembly elections and asked everyone to work together.

On December 9, 1946, the Constituent Assembly of India held its first meeting in New Delhi to begin the process of drafting the Indian Constitution. The assembly began its work on this historic date, which laid the foundation for India’s independent and democratic governance. The assembly’s purpose was to create a constitution for a sovereign India, a task that would take nearly three years to complete.

The assembly later elected Dr. Rajendra Prasad as its president on 11 December, 1946, and continued its work until the Constitution was adopted on November 26, 1949, coming into effect on January 26, 1950.

“The BJP and the government at the Centre is trying to rewrite the Indian Constitution. We are opposing that. Our Preamble is sacrosanct and we will not let this govt change it. We have coined a slogan for it: ‘Banglar adhikar rokkha…’(saving the rights of people of Bengal). We will be taking pledge for it. This will be part of our programme, which will be from 9 December to 8 January. It will start from Kolkata and then will spread across the districts. The second programme will start from 9 January and continue till 6 February, which will be baithiki sabha (interactive programme) at the booth level. Under this programme we will also include women from all walks of life and we’ll try to reach around 80,000 booths in the state,” said Chandrima Bhattacharya.
