  • A 21-year-old law student was found hanging in the chamber of an advocate at Kakdwip in South 24-Parganas on Wednesday night, triggering tension and outrage in the area.

The deceased, identified as Sonia Halder, a resident of Gandhinagar in Kakdwip, was pursuing her degree in law and had been visiting advocate Sheikh Manowar Alam’s chamber at Nayapara under Pratapaditya Gram Panchayat for practical training, police said.

According to family members, Sonia had left home on Wednesday morning as usual to attend her training session. Later in the night, news reached the family that she had been found hanging inside the lawyer’s chamber. They rushed to the spot and informed the police, who recovered the body and sent it to Kakdwip Sub-Divisional Hospital for post-mortem examination. Police said the family of the deceased lodged a written complaint alleging that the advocate had promised to marry Sonia but later backed out, leading to her death. Based on the complaint, a case has been registered against Manowar Alam, who is currently absconding.

“We are investigating the case from all possible angles, including allegations made by the victim’s family. The accused lawyer is on the run, and efforts are on to trace him,” said a senior police officer. The incident has sent shockwaves through the local legal fraternity and residents, who have demanded a thorough probe into the circumstances leading to the young student’s death.
