Kolkata: Presidency University has decided to install more CCTV cameras around the periphery of the girls' hostel in Salt Lake following allegations of a miscreant hovering around the campus and making obscene gestures at the hostel inmates.
Bidhannagar Police said that they heard about the incident and are checking CCTV cameras on the roads and even visited the hostel. "Cops spoke to the hostel super and inmates and asked for any photos or videos that the students clicked or recorded. The superintendent, along with hostel inmates, also visited the police station in the evening and lodged a complaint," said a student.
On Nov 12 night, a man came to the park at the back of the hostel and started making obscene gestures at the hostel inmates, who are first-year students and also flashed light towards them.
They got scared and called their seniors. "This happened around 1.30 am to 3 am. Similar incidents of harassing inmates occurred in front of other rooms earlier on Sep 15 and Nov 6. We previously informed our hostel superintendent, and that day too, we informed her around 2 am.
But she did not come out of her room. After repeated requests, she called the police at 2.15 am," said a boarder.
Dean of students Arun Maity said, "We already took stock of the situation and conducted a survey to install more CCTV cameras around the periphery of the girls' hostel, especially in the corners and at the back. The swimming pool-facing wall will be covered by asbestos. At night the area becomes unsafe for them. We have also decided to increase fencing around the hostel. We will request the local police station to increase frequency of patrolling in that area.
The civic authority is also taking up the matter."Presidency Alumni Association vice-president Bivas Chaudhuri said, "The university administration has assured us that necessary action is being taken to book the culprit."
