Durgapur: A 62-year-old man, who was hospitalised after being stung by a swarm of bees near Major Park at Durgapur on Monday, died at the hospital on Friday. Nirmal Dutta, former headmaster of RE Model School in the city, was stung 890 times, police said.
Dutta was a resident of Sukantapalli, Durgapur, in West Burdwan. According to the president of the school's managing committee and ex-councillor of ward 16, Sushil Chatterjee, the retired headmaster was on his way home from Durgapur City Centre on a motorcycle with his son, who is a doctor, on Monday evening when a single bee stung his son near Major Park.
The son asked his father to stop. As Dutta halted and removed his helmet, a swarm of bees suddenly attacked him, stinging his entire face and causing him to collapse on the road.
When the bees turned on his son, the young doctor ran for his life, asking for help. However, no one came to their aid.
Police officers eventually covered themselves with blankets and rescued the duo. They were taken to a private hospital for treatment. The son was discharged on Thursday. Dutta died on Friday morning. His body was sent for postmortem at Durgapur Hospital and later cremated.
