  • Kolkata: Taking note of the fire brigade's difficulty in fighting the blaze on Saturday, KMC mayor Firhad Hakim and fire & emergency services department minister Sujit Bose stated that the govt will soon convene a meeting with traders to discuss fire-safety norms in the central business district to prevent a repeat.

According to Ranvir Kumar, DG (fire & emergency services), the firefighters had to overcame several obstacles to reach the seat of fire. Sources indicated that, besides narrow lanes, the hawkers had chained up their wares on the ground, blocking ground space. "In addition, the overhead wires formed a maze, making the use of ladders extremely difficult.

"The first few fire-tenders ran out of water within five minutes.

We then had to use a relay system to bring water from the KMC deep tubewells, with the relaying of water beginning from the India Exchange Place. We drew water even from our headquarters and Lalbazar," said an officer, rejecting claims of delays.

"The fact remains that this was a concrete structure bordered with iron structures all around it. These had electrical equipment stuffed to the brim. Hence, it became easier for the fire to spread," said Kumar.

He mentioned it was too early to ascertain the exact reason behind the fire. "The forensic experts will collect evidence. We will not make any guesses," said Kumar.

After inspecting the site, mayor Firhad Hakim said: "I will hold a meeting with CESC, the fire department, the traders' association, the municipality, and the police to ensure that there are no obstacles for the fire department."

Fire minister Bose, who also visited the spot, said that the firefighters did a commendable job. "I will hold a meeting with the association members next week to discuss fire safety issues," he said. He urged the traders to be more cautious and follow fire-safety norms.
