  • Kolkata: After an eight hour hunt, which involved the analysis of 26 CCTV cameras, police on Monday recovered a six-month-old child who was abducted from BC Roy Hospital at Beleghata where his mother had brought him for treatment.

The woman who carried out the kidnapping, Sabina Bibi (41), was arrested from Uttar Kashipur on Monday evening, 8 hours after she fled the hospital with the child and moments before she could sell the child "to the highest local bidder."

The accused, Bibi, fled with the child from within the hospital premises when his mother entrusted the accused with the child to go and buy his medicines. The incident, which took place within the govt children's hospital premises, prompted cops to swing into action immediately, setting up nakas in the vicinity and taking help from local transporters to try and trace the child.

The Phoolbagan police, along with the detective department, first collected CCTV footage from the hospital to try and trace the accused and recover the child. Statements of those who saw the accused are being recorded.

"We had 10 CCTV footage to show that Bibi was fleeing with the child. These recordings were from hospital premises. However, the best footage came from the Phoolbagan crossing, where we found her taking the auto, the child crying on her shoulders.

Since she came from Bhangar, we shared this footage with all sources back at Uttar Kashipur. We found her again in footage at Chingrighata, making us believe she was heading towards Bhangar.

The Kashipur police shared the footage with different bheri groups. One of them recognised the woman. Cops reached Bibi's residence and rescued the child. At that point, the child was playing and looked at ease in the new setting," said an investigating officer.

According to DC (eastern suburban) Gaurav Lal, "On Monday morning around 9 am, the mother decided to take her child to consult the doctor at BC Roy Hospital. Hailing from Majumpur village at Haroa in North 24 Parganas — her matrimonial house — she recently came to Uttar Kashipur and was not too familiar with the area. She boarded a bus on route KB-22, with her 6-month-old son. She boarded from Kadamtala bus stand in Uttar Kashipur," DCP Lal.

It was in the bus that she met Bibi.

"Inside the hospital, they took the baby to the doctor, and the doctor prescribed some medicines. At that time, Bibi assured the complainant that she would take care of the baby and asked the complainant to bring medicines. Relying upon her, the complainant went to bring medicines. Taking this opportunity, Bibi escaped from the hospital with the baby. A search is on to arrest the other accused who might be involved, including a possible buyer.

The rescued baby has been returned to his mother," said DC Lal.

"We have co-operated with the police and all relevant help, including footage, was shared extensively. We are relieved that the child has been traced," said a hospital administrative officer.

Cops at Phoolbagan Police Station have initiated a kidnapping case under section 137(2) BNS.
