  • Kolkata: A taxi driver, Suresh Shaw, has been arrested for hitting a homeless man while making a high-speed turn from Lenin Sarani towards College Street and then dumping his body near Raja Subodh Mullick Square at Wellington on Saturday morning.

The body was sent for post-mortem report which revealed that the injuries were ante mortem, suggesting a fatal accident. The crime came to light when police began scrutinising CCTV footage from the area. The footage revealed that the taxi, while taking a turn, hit the man from behind. The impact was fatal.

Upon realising the gravity of the situation, Shaw was seen exiting the vehicle, dragging the victim's body into the taxi, and then driving a short distance before dumping the body on the footpath in an attempt to disguise the incident as a natural death.

Police identified the taxi from the footage and traced it back to its owner with the help of the RTO.

Shaw was subjected to intense questioning. Under pressure, he confessed to the crime, leading to his arrest on Monday.
