KOLKATA: A woman received a bullet injury on Wednesday at an upscale residential complex in Howrah's Shibpur area, police said.
A woman identified as Poonam Yadav was injured after a bullet grazed her neck inside a residential complex near Shibpur police station.She was rushed to a private hospital in Kolkata, where she is currently undergoing treatment. Police have detained her husband, Gopal Yadav, for questioning.
According to a senior police officer, Gopal claimed the incident occurred while he was cleaning his licensed firearm, which “accidentally discharged” and injured his wife. “A shot was fired inside the flat, leaving Poonam bleeding on the floor. Our officers from Shibpur Police Station reached the spot soon after and rushed her to the hospital,” the officer said.
Police are examining whether the husband’s version is accurate and checking if there was any dispute between the couple at the time. Investigators are also verifying if the firing was accidental or if any other individual may have entered the flat.
During initial questioning, Gopal repeated that the weapon went off while he was cleaning it. Pankaj Sharma, secretary of the housing complex, said, “Gopal Babu told us the firearm went off accidentally while he was cleaning it. He said there was no deliberate firing.”
