  • Kolkata: The city cops have arrested four persons from Hyderabad, and Upleta and Rajkot in Gujarat for being involved in multiple digital arrest frauds pegged at above Rs 4 crore.

In the first arrest, Kolkata Police arrested three individuals — one of them an economics teacher and another a BEd student — in connection with a high-profile cyber fraud case involving Rs 78.3 lakh. The arrests were made following a complaint filed by Dipannita Dhar (61) from Kolkata who was duped into transferring the money under the pretence of a legal issue involving her identity.

The accused, economics teacher Varu Ravikant Gokalbhai (37), BEd student Sondarva Jilesh Narendrabhai (21), and Chandera Vipulkumar Kanabhai (35), were apprehended from different locations in Gujarat in the early hours of Nov 14 and 16.

The accused were presented before the Judicial Magistrate in Upleta, Gujarat, for transit remand to Kolkata.

In the second case, a management student from Haridevpur was swindled out of Rs 3.1 crore last year by a classmate he met while studying in Delhi. The accused, Akram Ali Rizvi, was arrested in Hyderabad, after a 14-month-long probe, and brought to Kolkata on transit remand.
