Jadavpur University has barred four male students from entering the campus pending an inquiry into allegations of verbal abuse, physical assault and intimidation of several women students, a senior university official said on Thursday.
According to the complaint filed by 10 students, most of them women, the incident occurred on the evening of 18 November inside the campus. The four accused students, identified as two from the chemical engineering department, one from civil engineering and another from production engineering, allegedly directed abusive and offensive comments at least four to five women students. The situation escalated when the women confronted them, leading to a heated altercation. One of the accused allegedly assaulted two of the women and made derogatory remarks questioning their character and “why they were sitting outside,” the official said, quoting the written complaint.
As other students – both male and female – gathered to support the women, the four accused allegedly turned violent again, assaulting male students who intervened. The alleged harassment and intimidation continued as the women made their way towards Aurobindo Bhavan, the administrative building. The official said that university security personnel rushed to the spot and attempted to disperse both groups. However, the four accused students allegedly refused to obey instructions and reportedly threatened the guards. Despite this, security staff managed to prevent the situation from spiralling further.
On Wednesday, the group of 10 students submitted a formal complaint to the authorities, detailing the sequence of events and seeking immediate action. In response, vice-chancellor Chiranjib Bhattacharya constituted a committee to investigate the incident. The panel has been asked to submit its report within a week. “Until the inquiry committee completes its probe and submits its findings, the four students will not be allowed to enter the campus,” the senior official said. The incident has triggered concern within the university community, with students urging swift action to ensure campus safety and accountability.
