Kolkata: A Barasat court on Thursday sentenced a 48-year-old man, Enjar Nabi, to imprisonment until death for murdering his 11-year-old nephew, Fardeen Nabi, in 2024 — a crime that later fuelled widespread mob attacks across Bengal after the accused spread false rumours about "child-lifters". Judge Prajna Gargi Bhattacharya (Hussain) of the 7th Additional District and Sessions Court delivered the verdict under Section 302 (murder) of the IPC. Enjar was also awarded seven years' jail under Sections 363 (kidnapping) and 201 (destruction of evidence).
The court directed the life term would start only after he completed the seven-year sentence. — Sanjib Chakraborty
