  • Kolkata: The Coast Guard on Thursday intercepted a Bangladeshi fishing boat inside India's Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) in the Bay of Bengal, and apprehended 28 of its crew members. Coast Guard officers boarded the vessel to find that the crew didn't have permission to fish within India's maritime zone, in violation of the Maritime Zones of India (Regulation of Fishing by Foreign Vessels) Act, 1981.

The Coast Guard ship, named ‘Amrit Kaur', escorted the vessel to the Namkhana fishing harbour. The boat and its crew were handed over to the Marine Police for legal action, an ICG (Indian Coast Guard) statement said.

Officials said this was the fourth Bangladeshi vessel intercepted in Indian waters this week. "This underscores the Coast Guard's vigilance in curbing illegal fishing and safeguarding the interests and safety of Indian fishermen operating near the maritime boundary," the official added.
