• Kolkata pays tribute to Zubeen on his birth anniversary

  • The 53rd birth anniversary of the late singer Zubeen Garg was celebrated at the Assam Bhawan in Salt Lake on Tuesday. The event, organised by the Kolkata Assamese Cultural Association (KACA), saw admirers gather to pay homage to the late singer, who passed away in Singapore on September 19.

    Tapas Deb, joint resident commissioner, Assam Bhawan, Prof Dr Khanindra Pathak, president, KACA; and Hiten Hatkhowa, working president of the association inaugurated the event by lighting a lamp. Also present were noted lyricist Priyo Chattopadhyay, composer Akash Sen and actress Jaya Seal Ghosh.

    The evening featured covers of Zubeen’s songs by emerging artistes Abhipriya Goswami, Sujata Pal, Kanushree Baruah, Priyambada Hazorika, Indira Deka Roy, and Harsh Reev Shandilya. Mayurakshi Bora, Ishani Dutta Roy, and Swachhata Chakravarty presented dance performances to the late singer’s songs. Sanghati Das, who had performed alongside Zubeen in Kolkata, shared her experiences with the singer and her rendition of his songs left the audience deeply moved.

    The cultural evening, hosted by the association’s vice-president Anuj Gogoi, concluded with an emotional rendition of the Zubeen’s Mayabini Raatir Bukut by the audience, accompanied by Abhi Kashyap on the flute and Imon Borah on the piano.
