Tremors of 5.7 magnitude shook the city intensely this morning bringing scores of citizens on the streets. The origin of the earthquake, as per the information shared by the India Meteorological Department was Bangladesh having a depth of 10 km.
The day had just begun for people in larger parts of the city. Offices had just opened while people in households were just preparing for the day when the furniture and hanging articles suddenly began to shake at around 10.08 a.m. From Burra Bazar to Esplanade, Park Street, Salt Lake and Garia, citizens working in offices rushed out of the buildings in large numbers on feeling the jolts. Those back at home also moved outdoors in panic. Many people claimed that they had never experienced such severe tremors before in the heart of the city. Several citizens took to social media to describe their experience and fear. “Being a winter morning, I was doing my morning chores a bit lazily when the chair I sat on started shaking,” said Naima Nasser, a homemaker in South Kolkata. “The tremors were quite intense and I could see the fans, hanging lights literally moving to and fro. Without wasting a moment, I called out to my daughter and came out of the house informing the neighbours, who were also leaving the apartment in panic,” said the mother of two.
To Upasana Mukherjee, the earthquake was a chilling experience. With her two-year-old child at home accompanied by her arthritis-affected mother-in-law, the tremors brought intense moments of anxiety to the Gariahat resident. “I had just walked into my office and was trying to settle down when I felt the tremors on my desk. As the computer started shaking and I realised it to be an earthquake the first thought was about my child and my mother-in-law, who has difficulties in walking due to her ailment,” said the IT sector employee. While rushing out of the office, I called up my neighbours and asked them to help my mother-in-law. They took my child and my mother-in-law in the open with them and I felt relieved,” she added.
The tremors were caused by an earthquake of magnitude 5.7 having originated in Bangladesh’s Narsingdi.
