  • Kolkata: A doctor from Rawalpora in Srinagar was allegedly duped of Rs 23 lakhs by a fraudulent educational consultancy agency in New Town that had reportedly taken the amount from him promising MBBS admission for his nephew at a popular private college in Bengal.

According to complaint Sajad Ahmad, he visited the office at a commercial complex that had 15 odd employees working in three cubicles at Action Area II in New Town last month. Three persons — Vikram, Rajeev Kumar and Neeraj Singh — promised a guaranteed seat for his nephew at the private medical college in Budge Budge against a fee of Rs 23 lakhs. The men even demanded Ahmad to submit his nephew's educational documents and made him register for West Bengal counselling. Ahmad ended up paying the money in two transactions – Rs 15 lakhs through RTGS and Rs 8 lakhs in cash on Nov 18.

Police said the men had handed him a fake admission letter and told him that they would pick Ahmad and his nephew up from a hotel in New Town before they would jointly proceed towards the college. "On Wednesday, they called me around 10.30, claiming they were coming to pick me soon. An hour later, they called me again and asked me to visit the college by myself. They said they would meet us there," said Ahmad. "When we reached the college, they were not there. Their phones were switched off and the college authorities denied knowing them and refused admission to my nephew."

Ahmad rushed back to the New Town office but this time, the building security guards didn't let him in.

"We lodged a police complaint and visited the office with them. The office was shut and many of the gadgets were missing. Pages of the office register that had our names were torn. We tried to search my nephew's documents that they had kept as surety but they were missing as well," rued Ahmad.

Cops said another person, Ashok Kumar Boral, was also duped of Rs 20 lakhs in the same manner by the agency.
