  • Kolkata: The vice-principal of the law college in south Kolkata, where a student was allegedly raped in June, welcomed the freshers following the induction held on Friday. She wrote a letter to the governing body immediately after the programme, requesting alternative arrangements until the CCTV cameras are installed, to enhance security of the students.

Many of the first-year students admitted that the college was not their first choice after reading so much about ‘Team MM' of Monojit Mishra, the key accused in the rape. One fresher, standing in the queue, said: "This college was my third choice, but as per the seat allocation, I got this college for admission. I was tense about the college atmosphere, but since I entered the campus, I haven't seen anything uncomfortable. The teachers and staffers are cooperating with us."

Several students, along with their parents who came from districts, expressed their concern as well. But they were relieved when the college promised to meet parents every 45 days. Pinku Mitra, a parent, said: "Initially, I was a bit tense but later on, I felt that nobody is safe anywhere. That doesn't mean we should stop stepping out of the house. I told my daughter to be careful." Som Dutta Choudhuri, another parent, added: "The impression of the college to me changed when they told us that they will meet us every 45 days."

While addressing students in the induction programme, vice-principal Nayna Chatterji reminded students: "We have no elected body in our college, so there is no question of a union. Everybody should vacate the college premises after college hours are over. We are all here to listen to your problems, and if you face any issues, you should come to us directly."

Raima Jana, who came from East Midnapore, said, "Initially, I was a bit apprehensive but I feel somewhat relieved after interacting with the college authorities."

After the incident, the college's governing body decided to enhance the security system by installing CCTV cameras and appointing ex-army men as security staff. However, both decisions are pending due to a lack of funds. The college has already written to the higher education department for funds.
