• EC plans booths at north Kol condos with 300+ voters

  • Kolkata: The Election Commission (EC) has written to several housing societies in north Kolkata to set up booths on their premises. These will be exclusively for residents of the housing societies, an EC official said. The letter stated that the EC is approaching societies with over 300 voters on the premises so that residents can easily reach their booths.

This comes as part of an effort to boost turnout in the North Kolkata parliamentary seat, which has recorded low polling in several past elections.

The EC official mentioned that the matter was discussed in a recent meeting when deputy election commissioner Gyanesh Bharti was in the city. He added that once everything is settled, the matter will also be placed in the meeting of the political parties to get their nod. The official said that the housing societies were asked to send their replies immediately.

The booths would be set up in the community halls of the housing societies, poll panel officials said.

The same process will be followed in South Kolkata soon. Thus, the EC is trying to address the apathy of urban voters, particularly those staying in highrises, the official said.

In 2019, Kolkata North had a polling percentage of 65.8%, which dipped slightly in 2024 to 63.6%. Similarly, Kolkata South had a voter turnout of 64.2% in 2024, compared to 60.9% in 2019.
